There’s layers and complexity to this, from fragrant raspberry and red cherry, to dried herbs, rose, and earthy aromatics. There’s structure, minerality, spice and freshness in the palate, and it all comes together as a benchmark example of Pinot Noir for one of this country’s lesser-known wine regions. Winegrowing on the limestone soils of North Otago’s Waitaki Valley is not without its challenges, but as we see here, and like most regions with marginal climates, when it’s good it’s really good.
Te Kano is a relative newcomer as far as Central Otago wineries go. Having purchased a couple of small vineyards in Bannockburn, the Lloyd family have planted more extensively in both Northburn, on the east side of Lake Dunstan, and in the Waitaki Valley in North Otago. Winemaker Dave Sutton’s interpretations of this special part of the world are sophisticated and delicious, and if you're ever in Central Otago, their Bannockburn cellar door is an excellent visit.
