Gérard Fiou Terroir Silex Sancerre 2023
Sancerre, in the Loire Valley in France, is famously one of the benchmark regions for Sauvignon Blanc. This wine delivers the mineral style that is typical of the region, being less pungent than you might expect from Savvie B, with its pretty citrus, fennel, floral and sea spray aromatics. The palate has a nice amount of weight and power and it finishes with a chalky, persistent freshness. ‘Silex’ refers to the sedimentary soils that famously have a high composition of flint, and the vines for this cuvée are over 60 years old.
Having grown up in Sancerre, studied in Burgundy and worked in wineries in California, Argentina and New Zealand (at Clos Henri no less), Florent Bourgeois returned to Sancerre to take over Domaine Gerard Fiou in 2013. The domaine is comprised of 9 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, in Saint-Satur on the eastern side of the Sancerre appellation. The estate was fully certified organic in 2023.
