Novum Chardonnay 2023
This is a great example of modern New Zealand Chardonnay. It walks the fine line of having both weight and creamy texture, with freshness and energy. It’s composed and elegant, and will do well with some aging. Fruit from 40 year vines, grown on the gravelly soils of the Wairau Plains, was wild yeast fermented and aged in French oak.
Rachel and William Hoare of Novum have an incredible depth of winemaking experience in Marlborough (and further abroad with the likes of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy). This experience is beautifully displayed in their sophisticated wines produced from small, organic Marlborough vineyards. Small in quantity, high in quality, Rachel and William look to “guide (rather than force) the fruit through the winemaking process.”
