Coal Pit Tiwha Pinot Noir 2021
There’s plenty to get excited about here. Central Otago’s lifted fruit profile is on show, with dark cherry and plum. A depth of flavour opens up - thyme, mushroom, earth and spice. For all its generosity of flavour, it's very composed and complete. Fine tannin, freshness, and depth, it’s all there. Tiwha is the flagship wine from this certified organic, single vineyard estate. Fruit was hand picked, fermented with 20% whole bunches, and aged in French oak for 10 months.
Set on the picturesque, north facing slopes of the Gibbston Valley, Coal Pit is a gem. Having purchased the existing 1994-planted vineyard, Rosie Dunphy made the decision to establish her own estate, rather selling fruit to other producers. With her team, she has not done this by halves, building the winery on site in 2007, and recently attaining full organic certification for the 7 hectares of vineyards. Winemaking is in the hands of the talented Anika Willner, who has built her career around her passion for Pinot Noir.
