Kewin Descombes Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2020
Wines from the cru of Morgon are known for being a fairly mineral, firm expression of the Gamay grape from Beaujolais. This is true to that, but it’s coated with beautiful, dense fruit purity. It’s persistent and supremely well balanced. This is Vieille Vignes, so from old vines, at least 80 years old in fact, that are grown on Morgon’s granitic schist soils. Fruit from a tiny 1.3 hectare parcel was hand harvested and wild yeast fermented. The wine was aged in seasoned oak barrels for 12 months before bottling without filtration or fining.
Winos will recognise the Descombes name, with Kewin’s father George being an instrumental figure in the modern revival of Beaujolais. Kewin first released his own wines in 2013 at just 21 years old. He has adopted the same traditional approach as his father, with organic practices in the vineyard and a minimal intervention approach in the winery.
Organic, unfined, unfiltered, minimal added sulphites
