Prophet's Rock Retrospect Pinot Noir 2019
It’s definitely not a decision made by the accountants when wineries choose to hold onto wines for later release. Thankfully the bean counters were ignored with Retrospect. Fruit for this is from a specific part of Prophet’s Rock Home vineyard and is aged for at least 5 years before release. It exhibits all the qualities of a wine of agility. There’s structure, balance, freshness and density. And yes, pop the cork now, but equally lie this beauty down for another 10 years.
Winemaker Paul Pujol remembers the first time he saw snow on the ground in November at Prophet Rock’s Bendigo vineyards in Central Otago. The adage that the greatest wines come from marginal climates really plays out here. Having honed his craft with European legends (Maison Kuentz-Bas and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé), Paul’s sophisticated expressions of this beautiful and extreme part of the world are among New Zealand’s best.
