Gil Family Estates Honoro Vera Monastrell 2020
Take a trip by the glass, to the extreme continental climate of Jumilla in Spain. Monastrell (call it Mourvèdre or Mataro, it’s the same variety) thrives here. Dark, dense fruit is an expression of hot days. Juicy freshness an expression of cool nights. This is satisfying, punchy red that represents outstanding value.
The Gill family are committed to organic viticulture at their Jumilla estate (it’s pronounced who-ME-ah btw). Heading south east from Madrid, across the high plateau of La Mancha, Jumilla’s dry, wide valleys still sit at altitude. This provides diurnal variation of sometimes 25 degrees, and with limestone soils, it’s a very unique place for wine growing.
