François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2021
Refinement and finesse are married with power here. Montée de Tonnerre is the largest of Raveneau’s Premier Cru holdings, which is still just 2.5 hectares. Sitting adjacent to the Blanchot Grand Cru vineyard, the vineyard faces south west, benefiting from the afternoon sun. After a challenging season, where frosts lowered yields across the region, fruit was hand harvested, wild yeast fermented in stainless steel tanks, before aging for 18 months in 7 to 8 year old, seasoned oak.
Wines as rare as hens teeth, this is the most celebrated, revered domaine in Chablis. It was established by Francois Raveneau in 1948, merging vineyard parcels he inherited with those of his wife, a Dauvissat (another revered producer in Chablis). The production is tiny, with small holdings in 3 Grand Cru and 6 Premier Cru vineyards. Francois died in 2000, and the estate is now run by his sons, Bernard and Jean-Marie. They continue to uphold their father’s philosophy and legacy in the vineyards and cellar.
