Greenhough Winegum NV
This isn’t as fruity tutti as the name suggests, but it’s certainly a curiosity. There’s lovely spiced fruit aromatics, but also an edge of sherry and peat. It’s super dry with tea-like tannins. Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris were wild fermented on skins and blended across different vintages - hence the NV (non vintage).
Andrew Greenhough and Jenny Wheeler left Auckland in 1991 to set up their Nelson estate on alluvial terraces in a place called Hope. With one hectare already planted at the site in 1976, they’ve expanded plantings of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as their mainstays, with small blocks of Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer. They are fully certified organic.
