Gravel Down Field of Feathers 2021

It might sound like a whimsical work of fiction, but this is the real deal. It’s beautifully textured, full flavoured white made with a little skin contact. There’s an orchard of fruit in the aromatics, and its juicy palate is balanced by a crisp, clean finish. A blend of Gruner Veltliner, Verdelho and Petit Manseng all from a small, certified organic vineyard in Henderson.

These new releases from Laurence Brand and his partner Rebecca Thorne are top notch. They source fruit from West Auckland and make wines with minimal intervention. They explain their considered approach -

“Gravel Down is a nod to the interrelationship between the vines and alluvial soils of New Zealand’s vineyards. Our name references the contrasting textures required to develop balanced and harmonious wines. Gravel – the structured, the hard and angular. Down – the soft, ethereal, and elegant.”
