Aurum Madeleine Pinot Noir 2017

Like people, some wines take a while to open up, but the wait is worth it. At least it is in this case. Aurum’s Madeleine might not have the immediate plushness you’ve come to expect of Central Otago Pinot, but there’s plenty of layers to discover. Wild herbs, florals, undergrowth, red and black fruits, and satisfying dry structure. The fruit comes from their organic Te Wairere vineyard in Lowburn. Whole bunches are foot stomped, fermented and aged for 12 months in French oak.

Aurum, based on your way out of Cromwell up Lake Dunstan towards Wanaka, is very much a family affair. Joan and Tony Lawrence established the estate in 1997. Their son Brook and his partner Lucie now take charge of production. They met while working together at no less than Domaine de l’Arlot in Nuits-Saint-George, Burgundy. Organics for them, is a defining philosophy at this beautifully situated Central Otago estate.
