Atipico Under The Plum Tree Field Blend 2023

$38.00

This is the kind of chillable, light red we’ve been loving of late. It’s best described by it’s maker as a “kaleidoscope of aromas of cherry, raspberry and blood orange through to an array of spices with a mixture of dried herbs. Gentle tannin is contrasted with a lovely negroni-like bitterness and a vibrancy on the palate”.

It’s a field blend, in the truest sense of the term. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc were harvested on the same day from a single, organic vineyard on the alluvial gravels of Rapaura in Marlborough. Vinification - a gentle foot press of whole clusters and wild yeast fermentation all occurred in the same vineyard, under a plum tree for 12 days. This allows the continued influence of season and environment over the wine being made. It was aged in an old oak puncheon, and left unfined and unfiltered.

While Jordan Hogg's Atipico label is fairly new, he is by no means new to wine growing. He was Young Winemaker of the Year in 2016, and has worked for organic Marlborough icons Seresin and Rock Ferry. Based in a region that could be described as our most commercial, we love that his wines are characterful and indeed atypical.
